I stopped into Angler's Lie last spring after I moved back to Washington DC. The guys there were super helpful at getting me started on shad fishing (about which I knew nothing). They gave me some practical advice, a few good flies, and directions to Fletcher's boathouse. They were not at all trying to pressure me to spend more than I could afford - in fact, they were glad to help set me up with just the cheap essentials to give shad fishing a try. I'll definitely be going back there.

Not many people know that there is GREAT trout fishing in the hills and bluffs of southeastern Minnesota. This book is a pretty good comprehensive review of all of the major rivers and streams in the region. The only complaint I have is that the maps are pretty weak and the directions can be a little weird. Take a DeLorme atlas with you and you should be in good shape.

I picked up one of these when I wanted to try fishing for shad but didn't want to shell out for a sinking line. I was pleased with the overall performance - it did a decent job of getting my fly down deep enough and was not really a hassle to cast at all. It probably was not as totally effective as a sinking line, but it was a convenient (and relatively cheap) substitute. I also intend to use it for lake fishing for trout the next chance I get.

This is a good comprehensive encyclopedia of fly patterns: dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers, terrestrials, you name it. The photos are good - really well tied flies, and large enough photos to see the details. I'd say that the biggest downside of this book is that it doesn't really have any specific insructions, so if you don't already know the basic steps and techniques of a given pattern you might be a little bit stranded.

(Also - I think I have seen this book in a lay-flat spiral ring bound format. I'd recommend buying that if possible, it would be much easier to use while tying.)

This is a great resource for fly tying. This is not just a list of fly recipes (although it does include all of the essentials). Hughes' emphasis is on the 31 basic pattern styles that are the foundation of fly tying - catskill dry; hairwing caddis; fur nymph; etc - For each style he presents the basic step-by-step instructions, half a dozen of the major variants, and tips on fishing. The photos of the instructions are pretty good, although the photos of the individual fly patterns are a little small.

If I could only have one book in my fly tying library, this would be it. It is definitely the one I refer to most often.

I've used one of these for the last few years. The nippers are fine, although they get dull eventually. The Nail knot tyer is easy to use - only took one or two tries to learn the basic process. I have never actually used the hook sharpener so I can't really say anything about that. Does anybody use hook sharepeners? All around, a good tool.

Works as well as any other flotant I've tried. My experience is that it generally flows better than Gink in cold weather, but the difference is pretty minor.

The bottle is what really makes this a good item - it conveniently hangs upside down for easy dispensing and the flattened shape makes it easy to squeeze out as much as you need.

I picked up one of these when I first started tying flies. It worked okay for a few years, but it was not great. One big problem is that you cannot really affix the vise to a table and the pedestal is not heavy enough - so it sometimes will slide around while you are tying. The tools are not really very good - I found myself upgrading pretty quickly. If you want to get started in tying, I'd recommend just buying a basic vise and the basic tools separately.

I picked this net up last week in New Hampshire because my regular net is too big too easily carry in my carry-on bag on the flight up there - this one was a little smaller, and was on sale at the LL Bean outlet store.

It's a net, how much can you say? It is well designed, has a nice finish, etc. The bag seems pretty sturdy and has a small mesh that seems to get tangled up less often than my other net and is probably better for the fish. The "medium" is a good size, small enough that I can easily cram it into my suitcase but still large enough to be useful for decent small-stream trout and bass.

I have been using this vest for the last several years. It has served me pretty well. The fit is good, I find that it does not interfere with casting and fits pretty comfortably whether I am wearing it over a t-shirt or over several layers. The pockets are generally well positioned and adequately sized. Probably the only really big drawback is that the flaps on the chest pockets don't have velcro all the way across, and small items tends to find a way to fall out through the gaps when you bend over. But at this price, this is a good all around vest.
